ESCRIMA KATA JUDAN SAN

    • Begin with feet together, facing north. Sticks are held together cradled in left arm. Bow.

    • Grasp bottom end of sticks with right hand and draw them out through the left, stopping before fully removed. Bring arms up in front of chest then thrust them out in front of you, sticks parallel to the floor.

    • Now grasp each stick separately, step out with right foot into ready position (feet are at shoulder width, straight arms move out in big circles and end so that sticks are crossed 4-6" from tips).

    • Quickly whirl sticks to double high chamber over shoulder, touching shoulder blades, then spin them down under armpits. Now step back with right foot into left "guard" stance (feet are in backstance position but weight is distributed evenly) with right stick chambered over shoulder and left stick extended, tip drooping just below horizontal.

    • Spin left wrist up to land a jab with left stick (to the right of vertical) and prepare to begin upper eight strike sequence (all strikes are near vertical, to land on opponent’s shoulder) while moving forward:

    • - Left stick chambers over left shoulder, right stick strikes.

    • - Right stick chambers under left armpit, left stick strikes over right arm. Begin step w/ right.

    • - Left stick chambers over right shoulder, right stick strikes from under left arm. Step lands.

    • - Right stick chambers over right shoulder, left stick strikes.

    • - Left stick chambers under right armpit, right stick strikes over left arm. Begin step w/ left.

    • - Right stick chambers over left shoulder, left stick strikes from under right arm. Step lands.

    • Pull left arm back to left shoulder as right foot steps 180o around left, dragging body with it. Begin a crouch as you swing right stick in a backhand strike to northern opponent’s knees.

    • Continue momentum of turn as you step 180o with left foot and strike knees with left stick. Once struck, drag left stick up opponent’s centerline as you straigten and flip wrist at top to crack under his chin. Now finish him with a witeak to the crown.

    • Step back (southward) with left foot into a right guard stance facing north (right foot forward, left stick over keft shoulder, right stick extended).

    • Pivot left 180o (toward south) turning back on opponent, then jump up and south off left foot to land on right as you turn 180o left, striking downward on approaching northern opponent’s head first with left stick, then with right. Land with sticks chambered on left in a modified right front stance facing north.

    • Step back with right foot into a left guard stance facing north.

    • Turn attention to east and throw horizontal strike to head with right stick, then circle it around again for a second strike to head, this time following through (both from right to left). Now with right stick at chest, perform a witeak to opponent’s crown.

    • Take a strong right front stance (facing east) and execute an X-block.

    • Hold the block out and snap a front kick with right foot & land forward.

    • Step southward with left foot and strike at falling opponent’s head as you turn, first with left & then with right (at approx. north). Land in a horse stance facing west, sticks loosely chambered on left.

    • Throw horizontal strike to head with left stick (as right stick slides free), then circle it around again for a second strike to head, this time following through (both from left to right). Now with left stick at chest, perform a witeak to opponent’s crown.

    • Take a strong left front stance (facing west) and execute an X-block.

    • Hold the block out and snap a front kick with left foot & step to rear striking at falling opponent’s head as you turn, first with left & then with right (at approx. south). Land in a right front stance facing south, sticks chambered on left.

    • Execute wheel strike (vertical strike to opponent’s outstretched hand) with right stick, coming back to left armpit.

    • Execute one-two strike (lower [right] then upper [left] downward strikes) while stepping forward (south) with left foot into left front stance.

    • Execute wheel strike with left stick, coming back to right armpit.

    • Execute one-two strike (lower [left] then upper [right] downward strikes) while stepping forward (south) with right foot into right front stance.

    • Execute wheel strike (vertical strike to opponent’s outstretched hand) with right stick, coming back to left armpit.

    • Execute one-two strike (lower [right] then upper [left] downward strikes) while stepping forward (south) with left foot into left front stance.

    • Perform witeak with left stick to southern opponent’s crown then immediately drop to a toe strike with right stick as left comes to chamber over left shoulder. 1st keai point.

    • Step up into a left guard stance facing south.

    • Step back (northward) with left foot then pivot left 180o into anoter left guard stance, this time facing north.

    • Now perform a left shoulder roll toward the north landing in a croutch (left foot & right knee on floor) as you sweep the northern opponent’s knees with left stick, then right (sticks stay out toward west).

    • Draw the sticks up your opponent’s centerline as you rise into a left front stance facing north (right stick leading, left trailing). Right stick follows a big arc which ends with a thrust to northern opponent’s face from under left arm (left stick loosely chambered over right shoulder). 2nd keai point.

    • Step back with left foot into a relaxed right front stance as you snap left stick out & back horizontally to clean your stick.

    • Step to west with left foot into a wide left front stance (facing north) with most weight over left foot and perform double umbrella block.

    • Follow with a right hinge kick to opponent’s hip. Drop foot back and turn 90o to the right as you perform a one-two strike to falling opponent’s head (right then left). Land in a right front stance facing east, sticks chambered on right.

    • Step to south with right foot into a wide right front stance (facing east) with most weight over right foot and perform double umbrella block.

    • Follow with a left hinge kick to opponent’s hip. Drop foot back and turn 90o to the left as you perform a one-two strike to falling opponent’s head (left then right). Land in a right front stance facing north, sticks chambered on left.

    • Step back (south) with right foot into a left guard stance facing north.

    • Perform a right inside crescent kick landing foot to the west of your left foot (torso facing mostly west). Now pivot 270o left and extend left foot forward (northward) as you swing sticks horizontally (right to left, left stick leading) across northern opponent’s chest, ending in left chamber.

    • Staying in left front stance, perform one-two strike downward on opponent’s shoulder (right stick leading, left trailing). Right stick follows a big arc which ends in a sharp vertical crack to opponent’s crown over left arm (which is loosely chambered under right armpit). The right stick comes immediately back to chamber over right shoulder.

    • Slide left foot back to ready stance (feet are at shoulder width, straight arms move out in big circles and end so that sticks are crossed 4-6" from tips).

    • Now bend wrists so that tips of sticks come up into the opposite hand, and grab. Slide sticks through stationary left hand by moving right hand toward left, pushing sticks as it goes. As sticks slide left, right foot slides left to meet left foot.

    • Release right hand and quickly whirl left wrist outward to bring sticks below and around left arm to end cradled in crook of left elbow. Bow.
